TAMILE UYIRE …. KURALISAI KAVIAM/TAMIL HERITAGE MONTH
Tamil Heritage Month is celebrated annually in January to honour the rich history, language, and cultural traditions of the Tamil people. The month coincides with Thai Pongal, the traditional Tamil harvest festival.
In recognition of this heritage, January has been officially declared Traditional Heritage Month for Tamils in Lewisham, with the support of all councillors.
The event will feature a live performance by Vaakeesan, a prominent and currently trending Eelam Tamil rapper, singer, and songwriter, alongside Thison and Advik of Rapceylon, adding contemporary energy and global Tamil representation to the celebration.
A key highlight of the programme will be the launch of Kuralisaikaviam by world-renowned pianist Lydian Nadhaswaram, together with his sister Amirthavarshini, a composer.
Kuralisaikaviam is inspired by the Thirukkural, a classical Tamil literary masterpiece authored by the ancient poet Thiruvalluvar. The Thirukkural comprises 1,330 concise couplets that explore universal ethics, morality, and the art of living. The work is divided into three sections—Virtue, Wealth, and Love—and has been translated into numerous languages worldwide.
While most of the programme will be presented in Tamil, English explanations will be provided to ensure accessibility for non-Tamil audiences.
